Cutthroat: The Native Fish of the West

Native fish like the cutthroat trout occupy a very special place in the western United States.  They were here 10,000 years ago, they kept Lewis and Clark alive during their expedition back in 1805 and they are the only Western trout that have rights under US federal law as defined by the endangered species act.  [...]

Yellowstone cutthroat or cutbow

Marine Ventures is supporting the Trout Unlimited study of the impact of irrigation diversion canals on native cutthroat populations on the Gros Ventre River in Grand Teton National Park.  I have been out on the river a few times to get a first hand look at the trout population in the diversion canal about 100 [...]

TroutHunter post on the Ranch

There is a great post by René Harrop who has been fishing the Ranch for 5 decades.  You can read it on the TroutHunter blog site. Rene pretty much tells the story…

Diversion Canal fishing

I fish the Gros Ventre in the Tetons pretty regularly. Was on the river yesterday and found the fish below the diversion canal gate off the main stem of the river.  Caught 5 cuts all on various hoppers.  I debated whether to carry them up above the diversion canal and put them back in the [...]

Do the trout get to vote?

The Caldera Project is all about discovering what’s wrong on the Ranch.  There are numerous reports that seek to explain the history, the issues and possible solutions.  Everyone wants the fishery to improve on the Ranch including HFF, Idaho Fish and Game, guides, anglers and local businesses.  The river and stream restoration business is a [...]

Who cares about native trout?

Part of MVF’s coldwater program is to help conserve native trout populations and their habitats.  We have learned from our work with the Henry’s Fork Foundation that the Caldera portion of the Henry’s Fork is a non-native rainbow fishery that resulting from a series of events dating back 30 years.  See HFF This Week in [...]

What is a macrophyte?

I ran into Jim Gregory of Gregory Aquatics on the Gros Ventre River yesterday.  He was out tracking trout movements as part of the Trout Unlimited study on the impact of diversion canals on trout populations… another post.  Jim is the author of the Caldera Assessment that can be found on the Henry’s Fork Caldera [...]

July 3rd on the Ranch

It was a quiet day on the Ranch.  I fished from around 11 to 4, caught 6 fish, largest 22.  There were alot of fish on the surface from 11 until 2 then it died off.  And the surface feeders were voracious… pretty cool place to fish.  Better than the Snake in WY even if [...]

Sign of the times?

We saw this sign in Ashton behind Big Juds.

Island Park Dam release floods Ranch

There was an electrical problem at the Island Park Dam Monday morning that caused the dumping of water into the Box Canyon.  The water rose about 2 feet in a few minutes and surged down the river thru the Ranch.  We were at the Logjam right after it passed.  The logjam itself was almost completely [...]
